Direct Instruction

Direct Instruction is a series of commercial curricula in reading, math, science, history, spelling, reasoning, writing, and language.  DI curricula are developed and field tested over many years (before they are sold) by persons who are quite frankly the smartest, best educated, and most morally responsible in the field of education.

The aim of Direct Instruction--speaking of persons who design the curricula and the thousands of administrators and teachers who use DI curricula--is to transmit to students and ensure that students master classical or traditional knowledge systems.  DI rests on the assumption that most students can acquire and apply knowledge at a high degree of complexity when instruction is carefully designed so that concepts, propositions, and cognitive strategies are taught in a logically "faultless" fashion.

At the same time, the nature of classroom social interaction in DI fosters a true learning community in which students come to respect themselves, their teachers, their fellow students, the education process, and knowledge itself.  In addition, DI fosters effort, persistence, focused attention, and high expectations of success.

In short, DI simultaneously educates the individual (in the classical sense) and preserves our nation's core values and stock of knowledge.
